The ABCs of Marcel Broodthaers

The Broodthaers Society of America presents a special Omicron edition of The ABCs of Marcel Broodthaers, the spirited documentary from Belgian filmmaker Bertrand Lafontaine. The film was first broadcast on Flemish public television in 2019 and had its international premier with the Broodthaers Society last winter. To quote Paige K.B., one of the many people from Cairo to Seattle, Córdoba to Berlin, who requested a screening at the time: "M.B. was a wife guy who wanted us to understand that images are not innocent, and what's in your head is as real as you can make it be."
Screenings are offered by appointment over Zoom Sundays–Thursdays, 10:00am–10:00pm EDT (New York), in 90-minute intervals. The program begins Sunday, January 16 and runs through Sunday, February 13. To book a screening, click here.
The ABCs of Marcel Broodthaers offers surprising insights on the life and work of the legendary Belgian artist, as told by some of his closest friends and art world colleagues. These include Wide White Space founder Anny De Decker, publisher Yves Gevaert, curator Kasper König, and painter Walter Swennen. Broodthaers' widow, Maria Gilissen, acts as de facto master of ceremonies, offering candid takes on her late husband's peculiar work ethic and peripatetic mind. Broodthaers himself appears in many archival film clips, his personage by turns evoking the likes of Charlie Chaplin, René Magritte, P T Barnum, and Andrea Fraser. The documentary is in Flemish, French, German, and English with English subtitles.
Screening requests from individual artists, students, and scholars are welcome.
Children are not permitted to request screenings.
