Marcel Broodthaers: On Des!!!gn
On Des!!!gn is an interrogating little booklet by graphic designer and MoMA software developer Eric Li. It pokes various holes in the fences erected around Marcel Broodthaers practice, particularly the discomfort certain art historians have in acknowledging the critical role that graphic design plays — as sign system, as symbolic code, as class — in shaping our interpretations of Broodthaers' work. It's almost as if Li is saying that it's "okay" to be a graphic designer, it's okay to be invested in its carefully constructed political economies. This is a surprisingly refreshing take on Broodthaers' work, particularly the Industrial Poems.
