Broodthaers Society of America
Two more Lettres Ouvertes
In late 1968, as the first iteration of Marcel Broodthaers' Musée D'Art Moderne, Département des Aigles was trying to survive, having failed to secure official recognition (let alone funding) from the Belgian government, MB alerted his audience to the institution's impending doom. He also took the opportunity to post-scripted some art recommendations and threw in a modest policy request to boot. In an even more performatively desperate Open Letter dated Bruxelles-Anvers, 27 September, 1969, Broodthaers' rhetorically implores himself (and all failing institutions to (at least) save the furniture!
