Broodthaers Society of America
A Voyage on the North Sea
A charming but sinister book that complements the artist’s film of the same title and that documents the various pictorial details and surface effects of an anonymous nineteenth-century painting of a sailing ship that Broodthaers found in an antique store. Essentially, the project in toto is a film about a book about a painting of a ship at sea.
The pages of the book intentionally have not been trimmed. This may be done, but Broodthaers warns on the inside cover that “the reader had better beware of the knife he will be wielding for the purpose.” We will be leaving our knives in the drawer.
