En Lisant la Lorelei
In the Rhine River Valley near the town of Sankt Goarshausen, a siren named Lorelei was said to bewitch sailors from her granite rock, causing them to ground their boats or lose control of them and sink.
The contents of this book made its premier as part of Broodthaers’ “Eloge de sujet” show at Kunstmuseum Basel in 1974. It was inspired by his reading Heinrich Heine's poem "Die Lorelei" (1822) with a contemporary frame of mind.
The edition En lisant la Lorelei was published the following year and Includes a foreword by the artist and the text of Heine's poem in German and French on opposing pages. Accompanying illustrations consist of seven full-page facsimiles of newspaper clippings of stock market and gold market valuation tables from Le Monde and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, six pages of drawings incorporating decals for commercial artists, and six pages of 19th century graphic images of the Lorelei rock.
