PROVO
A complete run of PROVO (1965-67), the publication arm of the eponymous 1960s anarchist group. After Happenings and Fluxus but before Art Workers Coalition and the Guerrilla Art Action Group, there was PROVO, an Amsterdam-based collective that staged non-violent public actions with the goal of provoking violent reactions from police and the Dutch government. The actions were seen as compelling evidence of authority being inherently reactionary and oppressive. Although Marcel Broodthaers publicly avoided such overt political activity, recent scholarship by Stefaan Vervoort has uncovered Broodthaers' background admiration for and camaraderie with the group.
The publications, fifteen issues in all and largely handmade, supplemented the group's public presence with manifestos, cartoons, satire, and exposés of fascists at the state and local level. All in Dutch. We will set ourselves to getting things translated eventually. The first twelve issues are hand-bound and hand-colored in A4 format, folded vertically. The final four issues (13-15 and an "Extra") switched to broadsheet newspaper format.
